Tips For road Trips Abroad

Adventure Travel can often take you all over the world, but securing accommodation wherever you travel can be difficult, and costly. That's why many adventurers who find themselves traveling frequently have decided to purchase a timeshare resale. The flexibility that these vacation properties afford allows owners to travel to thousands of locations on a budget; and you can find timeshares for sale all over the world.

Tips For Road Trips Abroad
By Bonnie and Bill Neely
For years we have taken roadtrips throughout North and Central America and Europe, with and without children. These are some of the tips we have for others contemplating "winging it" on a roadtrip, especially in foreign countries.
Contact the Consulate to see what the requirements for Visa and Driver's License are for that country and what is the emergency contact number (like 911).
Get a road map and be sure you can understand it because the road signs along the way will not be in your language in most places.  Get familiar with international symbols. Learn what the driving laws (and penalties) are, and determine if you need extra insurance accordingly. For instance, in Mexico, if you have an accident you are guilty until proven innocent.
Be sure to take a good GPS  and rent a cell phone in the country in which you are traveling.
Consider renting an RV instead of a car, unless you have unlimited budget. With an RV you  don't have to eat out all the time or pack and unpack each day. If you do not have any RV experience, rent one for a weekend and go somewhere near home first to test your abilities with the setups, to make sure you enjoy doing what you have to do for RV travel before you leave unfamiliar places and/or languages. Some love it, some hate it, but with a family it made our trips much easier and less expensive.
Check with CDC in Atlanta, GA (http://www.cdc.gov/) to see health warnings or innoculation requirements. Sometimes immunizations have to be spaced several weeks apart and several months prior to going.  Then check again a week before going, so you will know any outbreaks of disease in the specific places. This site is the official worldwide health alert site for travelers.
Check out MedjetAssist (800)527-7478, which is emergency health insurance to fly you out to a safe hospital in case of severe emergency. And see if AAA covers the places you will travel.  If so, join that by all means for emergency road assistance. If not, know ahead of time how to ge emergency assistance for auto break-downs or medical emergencies.
Have an extensive first aid kit, including whatever prescription drugs your doctor would prescribe for tourista (usually Cipro and an anti-diarrhea med), and a general antibiotic in case you get sick. Take an extra pair of cheater eyeglasses and a copy of your prescription.
The least expensive way to get money while traveling is ATM, but this is not available in some small towns or out-of-the-way locations. Travelers check cashing is not as easy if you are not staying in hotels. Be aware of the hours and days banks are open. Other countries have more holidays than US and often are closed for long lunch hours.  Have a cash plan for emergencies, but know you may easily be robbed by pickpockets or car break-ins.  I'm not trying to scare you, just tell you to have a plan of how to safely keep emergency funds.
In non-western countries drink ONLY bottled water or boil your own, do not use ice, and take water purification tablets with you, and, except in major restaurants, eat only what is peeled or cooked.
Keep a copy of your passport in a safe place, not the same location as your passport. It's a good idea to exchange a copy with your travel partner, so that you each can help the other if one is lost.  Keep with you at all times a list of your health requirements and all medicines you take.
Pack as lightly as possible. Consider taking old clothes and leaving them along the way to make room for souvenirs. Another good idea is to take few clothes but buy cheap clothing, like souvenir tee-shirts, after you arrive, and take a fold away extra suitcase to bring your purchases home, or leave them for a local guide or helper.
Take a pocket phrase guide of the language of the country you are visiting, in case you need help on the road.
Keep safe snacks and bottled water in the vehicle, and in many countries do not trust street food.
To save money on food have the fun experience of grocery shopping locally. Then prepare breakfast and a light meal for evening each day.  Lunch in restaurants can be your substantial meal at a much cheaper price than dining out for dinner. It gives you a good mid-day rest period too.  Watch for restaurants where locals eat, instead of tour buses. Locals know where the food is good and moderately priced.
Keep sanitizing gel or rubbing alcohol handy.
In any mountainous travel b  e aware weather can shift drastically and quickly. Be prepared for rain or cold.
Google the voltage of the places you'll visit to know if you need electrical converters or transformers. You can order these from Magellans.com

We have purchased several different sets of travel plugs through the years, but we have always worried about that first time we insert one into another country's electrical outlet...Will fire shoot out or will we fry our appliance?  (We have had both happen in the past!) Magellans World Grounding Plug Set prevents all that worry because each plug is grounded and safe.  Just check before you leave home as to the kind of plug to take for wherever you are traveling, (you can Google to find out), select the plug that works, and leave the others at home.  So far as we can tell, this set covers anywhere you might want to go (except the Moon!)  Order from www.Magellans.com

Take comfortable walking shoes and an extra pair. Few places require dress attired in any country.
. You will have some amazing and wonderful experiences, and some tricky ones that help you grow. Have fun and be careful!
