Camp Hatteras in Outer Banks Is Perfectly Located
By Bonnie Neely
We are deeply sorry for the great difficulties this area has suffered.

Camp HatterasCamp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground (Good Sam Park) is ideally located for anyone visiting the Outer Banks for several days or weeks. This Resort has everything you could ever want for a fun vacation spot, whether you are in an RV, camper, or tent.  Camp Hatteras is located in the middle of the long strip of land which comprises the beautiful, golden-sandy beaches that guard the North Carolina coast and define Pamlico Sound which lies between the Cape and the mainland.  The Campground has 322  spots with full hook-ups, some of which are on the Atlantic Ocean, and a separate area on the Sound for tent camping.  And in the next year they are adding many more sites.

Camp Hatteras
Outer Banks, NCCamp Hatteras occupies 50 acres of prime beach front which extends from the 1,000 foot beach on the Atlantic to the 1,000 foot beach on the Pamlico Sound. There is a good camp store with propane, sites are level.  The beach is an easy walk from each site.  There are three stocked fishing lakes for catch and release on the grounds, and you can rent sailboats, windsurfers, and kayaks for the Sound. The marina is also on site on the Sound.  There are many games and entertainment including shuffleboard, tennis, miniature golf, basketball, a playground, and a good recreation room with plenty for teens to do.  There are also three swimming pools: indoor, outdoor, and children's, and Jacuzzi and hot tub.

Camp Hatteras specializes in hosting large groups and conventions and has a room which seats 300 for meals.  On Thanksgiving the Campground hosts the holiday dinner and provides turkeys for all the visitors, who bring covered dishes.  Open year-round, this Campground is really worth knowing about.

Just a few minutes from all the festivities of the Kitty Hawk (Kill Devil Hill) area, this is the best place to reserve if you plan to go for this year's celebration of 100 years of flight.  But make your reservations soon, because this is a big year in the Outer Banks.  Call 252-987-2777 or click here

You should set out early to drive all the way down to the Southern end of the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Highway 12.  We started from the bridge from Manteo and passed first through the beautiful protected area of the Pea Island Wildlife Preserve area of the National Seashore Reserve, where the dunes are visited my many birds.

We first stopped at the Cape Hatteras Visitor Center to see the 208 foot tall,  historical Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. The National Park rangers have good displays, films, and explanatory programs about this area, which has been known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic for centuries because of the many shipwrecks here: the reason the lighthouse was built in the 1800's.  For a nominal fee, you can climb to the top, 268 cast iron steps. It is especially interesting to see the path by which the great historic lighthouse was recently moved 2,900 feet in 1999 to its present location.  This was its third move and it is now hopefully far enough away from the changing coast to ever have to be moved again.

Cape Hatteras LighthouseThe black and white striped lighthouse is a National Monument and the ranger and Visitor Center have many interesting facts.  This was the first lighthouse to warn seamen away from instead of guiding them into a harbor.  This coastline of sandbars and treacherous sudden storms has been the graveyard for over 650 ships and over 1,000 sailors.  In the Visitor Center you will learn about the shipwrecks and pirate history.  Hidden behind the Outer Banks, many pirates could safely rest or store their booty in the protected waters of the Sound, which they learned to maneuver, or died trying.

Okracoke Ferry
Cape Hatteras, NCWe continued our 70 mile drive down to the tip of Cape Hatteras Island to take the 45 minute free ferry ride across Pamlico Sound to the little fishing village of Okracoke, which is on a smaller island.  Your wait for the Ferry is unpredictable, depending on the time of day and season, but the boat is a pleasant ride.  We drove all around the crowded little island seeing Okracoke Fishing Village and its many shops and restaurants.  We stopped for photos at Okracoke Lighthouse, which is not open for touring.  The Okracoke Island National Park Visitor Center is small with an interesting array of books for sale about sealife. You'll want to take photos of the perfectly circular harbor with only one small entrance to the Ocean, the perfect Pirate's Nest.

There are four National Park Campgrounds in the Outer Banks, but none have hook ups.  Dumping stations are near Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, and Ocracoke campgrounds.  For summer visits you can call 800-365-2267 for reservations.
