![]() Nevada's 'Dash for the Cache' Treasure Hunt
CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Travelers in Nevada can use a Global Positioning System (GPS) to play "Dash for the Cache," a geocaching game the Nevada Commission on Tourism is sponsoring that rewards winners with a prize to be found in Carson City, the state capital, and soon near Las Vegas too.
Geocaching (say it "geocashing") is an internationally popular "techno" treasure hunt with nearly 80,000 caches worldwide. Players use a GPS electronic device to mark their coordinates and locate a cache, or place where sponsors have hidden prizes. Coordinates for the Carson City cache are 39 degrees 09.973 north latitude and 119 degrees 45.989 west longitude.
"Nevada's wide open spaces make a perfect landscape for geocaching, and the geography in our state is so diverse that finding the treasure is half the fun," Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt, chair of the Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT), said. "The search could entail strolling down the street, jumping across a stream, or hiking for several miles."
NCOT sponsors a Northern Nevada cache in Carson City and soon will cosponsor with the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority a cache in Primm, a small Southern Nevada resort community on Interstate 15 southwest of Las Vegas.
"Geocaching is like modern day prospecting," NCOT Executive Director Bruce Bommarito said. "It's fun for all ages and levels of experience, from kids to grandparents and first-timers to people who have logged literally more than 1,000 caches in one year."
A GPS can get a player to within six to 20 feet of a geocache, depending on the location. The rest is up to the player's instincts. Geocaches can contain an assortment of prizes and a logbook where players record their visit. Players who take a prize may be expected to leave something for the next finder.
The official geocaching Web site, says there were 77,892 active caches in 192 countries at the end of 2003.
"Geocaching complements Nevada's recreational vehicle and outdoor adventure programs because many RVers and adventurers have a GPS in their vehicle and enjoy using them for fun," Bommarito said. Click here for Nevada Tourism.
Las Vegas Newest & Best RV Resort
By Bonnie & Bill Neely
Las Vegas International RV Resort is the newest and best RV resort in the area. You'll want to make reservations well ahead for high seasons (winter snow birds) for this park, which is for adults. Children under sixteen are not allowed in the public places and there is no playground. However, there is a large sports/park area just across the street, so health enthusiasts can get plenty of exercize.A Nevada group of investors did many studies to determine what people most want in RV resorts, and have succeeded in providing well. Number one is cleanliness: and Las Vegas International RV Resort is impeccably clean in all the facilities. Number two is safety, and this resort makes certain you and your posessions are safe here.
The third thing the research discovered is that RV owners want a place to gather with friends which is as comfortable as the best homes they have left behind. Las Vegas International RV Resort provides a lovely, large room that has a large screen TV and comfortable couches to gather with friends to watch the game. In another section you'll find at your disposal a fully equipped kitchen to make coffee or popcorn and have drinks. In another area is a pool table to enjoy. And part of the room is devoted to a high speed Internet-connected computer waiting for you to check e-mail or surf the Net.
But this is not the only computer provided for your use. You'll find, for your convenience, a full business center opposite the RV Office. The Resort has thoughtfully provided equipment equal to Kinko's with computer, FAX, printer, and other machines for you to use as needed. And there is high-speed Internet connection at each of the 220 sites. Also you'll find a lovely swimming pool, with fresh flowers year round.
For the pleasure of staying in your own "home" away from home, plan your next stay in Las Vegas to be here. Las Vegas International RV Resort's business is from repeat customers and word of mouth, so get your name on their list, because within two years the demand will be so great that they expects to tbe unable to take new customers unless they expand. New RV Adventure Campaign Promotion Seeks 'Your Koolest RV Moment'
The Nevada Commission on Tourism's new 2004 RV Adventure promotion to attract recreational vehicle travelers to the state features a photo contest called "Your Koolest RV Moment" that will award an evaporative cooler and other prizes to the winners.
RVers can enter by sending in photos of Nevada experiences they particularly enjoyed, and the one whose "moment" is judged to be the coolest will win a TurboKool evaporative cooler for their RV. The cooler, manufactured in Sparks, Nevada, and installed on the RV roof, draws fresh warm air from outdoors through a filter that cleans the air and cools it by as much as 20 degrees.
"Nevada offers exceptional attractions and accommodations for RV travelers," NCOT Executive Director Bruce Bommarito said. "RVs enable people to experience stimulating adventure and spectacular sites in Nevada's great outback without sacrificing comfort and convenience. Our RV promotions help publicize this perspective."
Anyone can enter and submit up to five photos, all unpublished and shot in Nevada, in any combination of black and white or color prints up to 8 x 10, slides 35 mm or larger, in a plastic sleeve; or digital at least 300 dpi, on a CD. NCOT must receive all entries by July 14, 2004. The mailing address is: Photo Contest, Nevada Commission on Tourism, 401 North Carson St., Carson City, NV, 89701.
Judges will select the top three winners for prizes that include a TurboKool Evaporative cooler for first place, a one-week stay at the Saddle West RV Resort in Pahrump, Nev., for second place, and a one-year subscription to Nevada Magazine for third place. Winning photos will appear in the 2005 Nevada Travel Planner or Nevada Visitors Guide.
