All The Fun of Cancun – And A Hurricane To Boot
by Nancy Hoch

Nancy & Dean Hoch at Coba's tallest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan near Cancun. Cancun’s at the top of our list of places for fabulous fun, and we even had the excitement of experiencing some of Hurricane Ivan’s wrath while vacationing there in September.  Hurricanes, mind you, are extremely rare on the Yucatan Peninsula, but one did sweep our way, and we had to spend a day in our hotel while the winds and rains raged.  Fortunately, the eye of the storm shifted, and Cancun was left largely unharmed.

The rest of our stay was magical. . .

Imagine an ocean of azure blue, so pale, so amazingly clear, so immense – with a deeper aquamarine color manifesting itself beyond the reef.

Imagine miles and miles of beach with cream-colored, powder-fine sand, entirely free of pebbles and other debris.

Imagine the brown skin, brown eyes and jet black hair of the diminutive, shy Mayan people whose primitive villages reflect a culture devoid of television, internet, and sometimes even of running water.

All the many colors of Cancun and surrounding areas exist under a number of immense green, red and white Mexican flags that wave above this far, northeastern corner of the huge Yucatan Peninsula as it juts into the Gulf of Mexico.

It was our pleasure to spend a vacation in this tropical paradise with our nine -year-old granddaughter, Amanda.

Dean Hoch on Garrafon Park's Sea Trek near CancunCancun is no longer just a spring break vacation spot for students; the city is now a major attraction for family and also intergenerational travel as well.

We stayed at the beautiful Casamagna Marriott where the service is excellent.  There is also the J.W. Marriott Hotel adjacent to the Casamagna.

Highlights of our trip included a high-speed, half-hour boat ride to Isla de Mujeres (Island of Women).  Here Garrafon Park offers all kinds of water sports and activities.
A favorite activity during our visit was a tour to a remote Mayan Village called Pak-Chen organized by a company called Alltournative (All-tour-native).  We trekked a number of miles along a rocky jungle path to Pak Chen, and we zip-lined over a small, remote lake (such a thrill), then rappelled 35 feet down through a rock opening about six feet in diameter into a cold, rain water pool sacred to the Mayans.  We then hiked hiked to a tiny, nearby village for a tasty luncheon prepared by women garbed in bright, white dresses trimmed in brilliantly colored embroidery–reds, greens, yellows, and every other bright color you can imagine.

To finish the day, we traveled to Coba, site of an ancient Mayan city where  anthropologists have uncovered an immense, gray pyramid – tallest in the Yucatan.  Amanda and others in our group climbed the 120 steps to the top while G&G waited below – just a bit too tired.

Cancun offers museums, superb restaurants, Ixcaret National Park, Mexican shopping markets, discos, and much more.

All of Cancun is offer color, color, and more color.  The entire destination is one that enriches the senses, so begin thinking about adding some of this marvelous color–and adventure–to your life today.
