Experience Authentic Local Culture When You Travel Responsibly
©2008 Step-Up Travel
Step Up Travel was founded to help empower local enterprises compete in an industry dominated by tourism agencies. Aligning itself with the United Nations’ ST-EP initiative (Sustainable Tourism-Eliminating Poverty), Step Up Travel prides itself in granting equal access to local service providers and helping redistribute wealth in a world that suffers from broadening inequalities.
Step Up Travel is also a trusted network of socially-minded travelers who can exchange ideas and recommendations, advocate for responsible travel practices, and seek meaningful interactions with local people when they travel. Through www.stepuptravel.org, Step Up Travelers have the unique opportunity to recommend and promote specific service providers they have met along the way, in order to help travelers and local people find and come to know one another.
Step Up Travel's vision is to empower local people, organizations, and travelers to work together to promote quality responsible travel experiences and to emphasize the importance of personal exchanges, deeper cultural understanding, genuine benefit to local people and their communities, preservation of the environment, and ultimately a more peaceful and equitable world.
Step UP Travel provides a premier, online marketing tool for small tourism providers in developing countries in order to increase their visibility and revenue. The site promotes responsible tourism practices by providers and travelers. StepUp Travel is building a trusted network for responsible travelers to meet one another, share experiences, and advocate for local people and travel in developing countries. It is the world’s first travel classifieds website emphasizing responsible travel.
Step Up hosts an ever-growing catalogue of local, cultural services and goods and the site is optimized to help the most unique and obscure cultural activities gain the web presence normally only known to larger, market-savvy tourism companies. Information is available in English, Spanish, Chinese and Portuguese. The site presents opportunities for travelers to learn from and interact with locals worldwide.
Within clicks, a traveler can directly contact local people offering travel activities such as:
- Samba lessons in Salvador, Brazil
- Spanish and guitar lessons in Buenos Aires
- Lacondon Jungle Eco-tours by local NGO in San Cristobal, Mexico
- Personal tour guides in Peking, China
- Apartment rentals in Prague, Czech Republic
With poverty increasing and sustainable development an ever pressing need, this site removes intermediary travel agencies, reducing inflated prices and allowing direct interactions between local services providers and travelers. Adhering to the principles of responsible tourism, Step Up Travel gives marketing priority to those individuals and service providers who agree to:
cultural understanding.
Travelers may post reviews on Step Up Travel about the ways they demonstrate responsibility regarding culture, environment, and fair business practices. Users of the website are encouraged to use the feedback function to leave reviews and opinions of
ads to help maintain the quality of the listings on Step Up Travel. The site also offers a travelers network – an opportunity for socially-minded travelers to connect with each other, exchange ideas and recommendations, advocate for responsible travel practices, and seek meaningful interactions with local people when they travel.
At Tourism Concern, an internationally renowned NGO states: "We are delighted to learn of Step Up Travel's initiative. It is a fantastic opportunity for smaller local businesses to link directly to their customers and will therefore be of enormous benefit to the traveler - the interactive nature of the website will ensure information remains up to date and gives a wider selection of ethical travel choices than ever before. Tourism Concern's mission statement is to ensure tourism always benefits local communities. Step Up Travel's links to communities will help achieve this goal."
Step Up Travel was started by two medical students, Scott and Trip, who, when on a gap year in Rio de Janeiro working in a hospital tending the poor, wondered why the tourism market was dominated by foreign, mass market providers when they were looking for the local culture and nature of the destination. Seeking to learn about the ‘real’ Rio, and inspired by what they found, the two decided to set up Step Up Travel – to help local communities tap into tourism as a way to create ownership and job opportunities – socio-economic opportunities that are the forefront of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s Sustainable Tourism to Elleviate Poverty (STEP) Initiative.

How does Step Up Travel enrich a travel experience?
1) Travelers can have richer, more authentic and cultural travel experiences by directly contacting, meeting, and engaging on a personal level with local people.
2) Travelers can help local services and products gain market access by recommending they create free classified ads on Step Up Travel.
3) The traveler can rate a service provider’s ad and help elevate their credibility and ranking. Alternatively, if businesses or locals are not being responsible, the traveler can highlight this to other travelers.
4) Travelers who receive an invitation may join this network of socially-minded travelers who are committed to personal exchanges, traveling in a way that benefits local people and their communities, and ultimately building a more peaceful and equitable world.
Step Up and Become Active in a Global Responsible Travel Community:
Visit Step Up Travel and request an invitation to the social network.
