Subject: Fwd: B elize Eco Lodge Welcomes Thanksgiving Guests Who Can Volunteer Time

Giving Back at Thanksgiving:
Belize Eco-Lodge Welcomes
Volunteer-Minded Guests

Petaluma, CA, Sept. 2007 ? Think Thanksgiving. Think giving. Consider combining an adventure vacation in the mountains of Belize with important volunteer work with the not-for-profit Casa Avian Support Alliance (www.casaavian.org).

A five day/four night holiday stay at Casa del Caballo Blanco eco lodge (www.casacaballoblanco) includes a visit to the major Mayan ceremonial site of Tikal, tubing through Xibalba, the Mayan underworld of the Caves Branch River, and hands-on work with the center?s avian rescue and rehabilitation program.

Casa del Caballo Blanco eco lodge is a six-casita accommodation on 23 scenic hilltop acres near San Ignacio, Belize. It shares space with an avian rehabilitation and release center called Casa Avian Support Alliance and offers voluntourism and adventure opportunities on premise and throughout the region.

Concerned travelers now can put words into action by booking a visit here and participating in avian rescue and rehabilitation efforts while also enjoying the culture, adventure and tranquility of a vacation in Belize. This is the first avian voluntourism program of its kind in Belize. It has been endorsed by the Rainforest Alliance sustainable Tourism Program (www.rainforest-alliance.org), Belize Audubon Society, Friends for Conservation and Development and Birds Without Borders.

The four-night Thanksgiving package, dubbed the ?Toucan Tour? runs $815 per person inclusive of accommodation, most meals, planned outings and on-site volunteer work with the various ongoing avian support projects. Excluded are local taxes, optional activities and service charges. Operation of both the lodge and its avian project, both not for profit, depend partly on guest revenues from the lodge operations as well as volunteer labor and participation to fulfill its vital mission.

?Habitat destruction, the effects of global warming and the illegal poaching and capture of exotic birds are real world problems. The work we do here seeks to understand and support the biodiversity of Belize that attracts and sustains over 530 species of migratory and resident birds spotted in a given year,? explains lodge owner Vance Bente.

E.O. Wilson, citing work done by leading wildlife biologists on the destruction of rain forests in the Americas, suggests that within a century, ?The stage will be set?for the inevitable loss of 12 percent of the 704 bird species in the Amazon Basin and 15 percent of the plant species in South and Central America.?

Lodge visitors are encouraged to assist with on-site nest-box building, general maintenance and feeding as well as habitat restoration, nature trail building, wild bird identification and signage. In addition, lodge guests can access numerous Mayan ruins and indigenous villages in Belize and across the border into Guatemala including Flores on Lago Peten, the World Heritage site of Tikal, and the recent Survivor site at Yaxha/Topoxte.

Casa?s hacienda-style Main House celebrates the region?s Hispanic culture with high, beamed ceilings, tile floors, hand-made furniture and interior design features hand-crafted by local artisans to evoke the footprint of an ordered, spiritual world of centuries ago. Nestled on a hillside overlooking the Mopan River Valley, the location provides a stunning view of the Mer de Verde, the ?Green Ocean,? a site that could likely have been used in a similar manner by the Mayans. The guest quarters, six thatch-roofed, fully screen cabanas, all have en-suite bathrooms, refrigerators, hand-crafted furniture and Mayan-inspired fabrics.

Meals served in an airy, thatch-roofed dining room include Mayan food prepared in centuries-old Quiché, Mopan and Yucatecan traditions. Creole foods combine exotic Hispanic and Caribbean flavors. All produce is fresh from Casa?s own gardens and local markets and prepared locally by Belizeans.

On-site facilities provide a haven for avian wildlife recently freed from captivity or treated for injury or illness. Here birds can heal, rehabilitate and eventually be released back into their natural habitat. The facility is dynamic and will evolve annually with the guidance and cooperation of the Forest Department, Belize Audubon Society, Friends for Conservation and Development, Aves Sin Fronteras, and other organizations and experts from the avian community. Visit the alliance website for more information, www.casaavian.org

Lodge guests are also welcome to join its Passport Program that over time will showcase a half dozen other properties in the Americas with organizations who have similar goals and missions such as avian support.

Take Your Conscience on Vacation:
Put It To Work in New Voluntourism Program in Belize

"Birds are the farmers of the world -
help us to help them continue to sow their seeds."

Petaluma, CA, June 2007 - Do concerns about our globe have your conscience working over time? Check this out.

A 4-night / 5-day vacation program from the recently opened Casa del Caballo Blanco Eco-Lodge in Belize allows you to take your conscience on vacation - and have fun too.

"Toucan Eco-Tour" available through Nov. 30, 2007 is $815 per person. Included are a supervised participatory avian / biodiversity learning experience, breakfasts, dinners and some lunches, accommodations, off-site archeological tours and airport transfers. Local taxes, bar tab, optional activities and service charges are not included.

Casa del Caballo Blanco, a six-cabana, eco-friendly accommodation, shares 23 acres with the not-for-profit Casa Avian Support Alliance (CASA) whose purpose is to understand and support the biodiversity of Belize that attracts and sustains over 530 species of migratory and resident birds spotted in a given year.

The project undertaken by Jodi and Vance Benté, lodge proprietors and Alliance founders, is in cooperation with the Government of Belize's efforts to protect critical habitat, the loss of which threatens the avian population.

This is the first voluntourism program of its kind in Belize. It has been endorsed by the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Tourism Program (http://www.rainforest-alliance.org), Belize Audubon Society, Friends for Conservation and Development and Birds Without Borders.

Toucan Eco-Tour
Upon arrival at Philip Goldson International Airport guests are transferred to the lodge for dinner and an in-depth orientation. The next morning you hike a newly established 900-meter nature trail where, on a recent morning, 30 species of birds were sighted in the bush and overhead. Participants are then free to assist on site with nest-box building, maintenance and feeding as well as habitat restoration, trail building and signage. Optional afternoon activities include canoeing the Mopan and Macal rivers, exploring the hills on horseback or birding with a staff naturalist. Later, guests gather on the patio for a cold beer or glass of wine before enjoying a Belizean dinner prepared by a resident chef with locally produced ingredients.

The next day is an early morning departure for a day-long tour of the dramatic ruins of Tikal National Park (across the border into Guatemala), a 222-square-mile nature preserve that's home to 410 species of birds and many animals. This largest known Mayan site (it once covered over 74 square miles) housed some 100,000 people at its zenith sometime between 800 BC to 900 AD. Tikal's largest pyramid, Temple IV, reaches 231 feet skyward; the panoramic view from its summit reveals temple ruins rising from the adjoining plazas and the dense Peten jungle reaching to the horizon. There's a shopping stop at El Remate, a small village, or at Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala, at a bustling market place with textiles, ceramics, masks, wood and stone carving, leather goods, and jewelry available.

The following morning guests pursue tasks with staff and perhaps the CASA biologists before donning headlamps on a river tubing excursion in caves on the Caves Branch River.

On departure day, depending on air schedules, guests may have time to visit the Belize Zoo enroute back to the airport.

Massive Humpback Whale Congregation, new FIVE-star hotels, new airport, NEW Cruise ship destination make samana, dominican republic hot spot this winter
Thousands of Whales and Top Secret Beaches Among Sites To Be Seen January through March
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - September 12, 2006 - Beginning in January, the Atlantic Ocean's largest population of majestic humpback whales, an estimated 2,000 to 5,000 males and females, will make their annual pilgrimage to the protected waters of the Samana providence in the Dominican Republic (DR). But, nature's colossal mammals are not the only ones flocking to the area of Samana. Actor Brad Pitt has been spotted more than once property shopping here while singer Shakira and actor Vin Diesel have already acquired their own pieces of this sleepy ecological paradise.
Approximately three hours by car from Puerto Plata, also on the north coast, the hilly and palm tree- covered area of Samana has been considered a pilgrimage by some because of its distance from a major airport. But, that sentiment is about to change. El Catey International Airport, located 20 minutes from the town of Samana, is scheduled to open November 1, 2006. The addition of El Catey to the peninsula provides the capacity and capabilities to handle large international flights from the United States.
In anticipation of the new airport, hoteliers are also announcing opening dates of new five-star luxury properties to accommodate the expected rise in tourism to Samana. Leading the pack is the Gran Bahia Principe group with four new five-star, all-inclusive resorts opening in various towns throughout the peninsula, including one on an uninhabited island:
Gran Bahia Principe Cayacoa - Scheduled to open November 1, 2006, beachfront Cayacoa is three minutes from Samana. The resort includes 295 rooms, all with Jacuzzis and most with a view of the sea, as well as four restaurants, four bars, gym and spa.
Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo - Schedule to open November 1, 2006, beachfront El Portillo is on the northern side of Samana in the quaint town of Las Terranas, a 30-minute drive from El Catey airport. The resort features 396 rooms, four restaurants, four bars, tennis courts, gym and spa.
Gran Bahia Principe Samana - Scheduled to open November 15, 2006, beachfront Samana is a smaller, more boutique-style resort. Featuring 110 rooms, all with Jacuzzis, the resort is located on the mainland facing Cayo Levantado Island and is 15 minutes from the town of Samana. It features three restaurants, three bars, a small shopping center area, tennis courts and gym.
Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado - Scheduled to open December 15, 2006, Cayo Levantado is located on an island and is 15 minutes from the town of Samana. The majority of the 195-room resort features a villa-style arrangement. Additional amenities include four restaurants, four bars, cigar bar, jogging circuit, tennis courts, gym and spa.
Land and air are not the only methods for reaching Samana. Starting in January, MSC Cruises will introduce three cruises that will stop at Cayo Levantado. The new seven- and 11-night cruises on the MSC Opera will spend an entire day on the coast of Samana. MSC Cruises will offer a diverse menu of 19 excursions to Samana featuring options such as beach parties, jeep safaris, horseback rides to waterfalls, cave and Taino petroglyph exploration and snorkeling, and whale watching during season.
Since the 1980's Samana providence has been known to nature lovers for its government protected marine area called the "Sanctuary for the Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic." This sanctioned area is the protected winter home for nearly a third of the Atlantic Ocean's humpback whale population. And, several government-permitted day tour companies in the town of Samana offer guided trips to visit the whales. Companies carrying permits include Victoria Marine (www.whalesamana.com), Prieto Tours (www.prieto-tours.com) and VIP Travel Services (www.VIPtravelservices.com).
In addition to whale watching, Samana has some of the most beautiful and hidden beaches in the Caribbean including Playa Rincon and Playa El Valle. It also hosts an array of activities to keep every age group entertained. Day trips include an archeological outing to Los Haitises National Park where centuries-old caves display petroglyphs by Taino Indians, a ferry ride to the distinctive island of Cayo Levantado, or a horseback excursion to breathtaking Salto de Limon waterfall.
Rich in history, the Dominican Republic's first tourist was Christopher Columbus in 1492. Since then, it has developed into a diverse and luxurious destination offering both Dominican and European flavors to more than one million U.S. visitors each year. At 10,000 feet, the Dominican Republic is home to the highest point in the Caribbean. It also features some of the best golf courses and beaches in the world, the largest marina in the Caribbean and is a chosen escape for celebrities, couples and families. For more information on the DR's whale watching excursions, accommodations and other activities, visit www.godominicanrepublic.com or call 1-888-374-6361.

COSTA RICA
Lands in Love (in Spanish, Tierras Enamoradas) - hotel and resort, is an environmental and animal friendly zone, located in a hidden valley in front of a cloud forest, beautiful as a legend. The resort was established by us - a group of 25 friends of many years, vegetarians, animal and nature lovers who fulfilled their dream of working and living together.
We searched in all over the world for a place that will suite us, and we found it in Costa Rica. Here we opened the hotel and founded an ecological foundation, “Terra Oriens”, that purchases rainforest areas for preservation and promotes environmental awareness.
Our mission is a good life for ourselves and for the people that would like to join to our communion: no harm to animals and dignity, honesty and love for mankind.
We are dreamers but not naive, we know that we can change only ourselves and in turn it may affect others, we hope.
Lands in love is not an ordinary hotel - this place is unique simply because it’s our home, we care and put our heart in everything we do.

Dominican Republic's Beach Preservation Project Celebrated During International Gathering
Event Coincided with Country's $30 Million Investment in North Coast Tourism Infrastructure
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - With its recent boom in popularity among vacationers worldwide, the Dominican Republic (DR) is investing significant resources to enhancing its tourism infrastructure. Most recently, the government allocated more than $30 million to development and improvements in Puerto Plata related to the protection of natural resources, water processing, sanitation systems, and new roads and walkways. A major milestone of that project, the recovery of a key beach, has been reached. And in true Dominican fashion, the occasion was celebrated with pomp and circumstance.
A weekend-long event, titled "Inauguracion Long Beach," showcased recent improvements at Long Beach, located on the "Malecon," or beach road, in Puerto Plata on the DR's north coast. The accomplishment was significant enough to warrant the attendance of Dominican President Leonel Fernandez, whose policies have helped move the country to the top of vacationers' wish-lists while making the island attractive to investors worldwide. The President was among an audience of such foreign investors and dignitaries at Long Beach on Saturday. On Friday, guests were treated to a Dominican fiesta, complete with musical and artistic performances to commemorate the occasion.
Completed by Spanish engineering firm, CADIC, the project at Long Beach was designed to reverse deterioration and erosion while giving the beach an overall facelift. A team of engineers, hydro-technicians, oceanographers, geomorphologists and specialized divers spent three months at the site analyzing sand discharge patterns, conducting environmental impact studies, and building coastal works. As part of its recovery, the beach was extended by just over a mile.
Due to the lengthening of Long Beach, the Dominican government revised urban development codes for the area to accommodate tourism-related projects. "The increase in quality beachfront in Puerto Plata has allowed us to re-zone, thereby maximizing its use for our substantial boost in tourism," notes Minister of Tourism Felix Jimenez. "However, to preserve the beauty of this area we've established limitations*, such as, a maximum building height of seven stories and no more than 300 hotel rooms per hectare (approximately 2.5 acres)."
One such project for the area, currently in the final planning stages, is an amphitheater to be constructed beside the San Felipe Fort along with a 130-foot-wide dock in front of the Puerto Plata Malecon. The new dock will feature restaurants, bars and Victorian-style architecture. The design of the projects is entrusted to architect Sara Garcia, daughter of businessman Isidro Garcia, owner of VH Hotels & Resorts, and the architect behind the Casa Colonial boutique hotel.
Other beach recovery projects are underway in the DR. Among them, Cabarete Beach on the north coast, known as a world-class windsurfing and kiteboarding destination, and the beaches at Boca Chica and Juan Dolio in the south. The project at Long Beach, however, was the most extensive, requiring a budget of over $7 million.
Other projects related to the tourism infrastructure in Puerto Plata and expected to be completed by April, 2007 include:
* Renovation of Isabela de Torres Avenue, which offers access to the Isabela de Torres cable car (budget = $3.5 million)
* Improvement of rain drainage and water processing systems (budget = $19.7 million)
* Elimination of Maggiolo sanitation site and building of new site at Caraballo, Montellano (budget = $500,000)
Budget for enhancement of Puerto Plata's infrastructure has been provided by the Ministry of Tourism, the Playa Dorada Hotel Association, and the Puerto Plata City Hall.
