The ride of a lifetime over the world  ™s largest mountain bike course
R11; The Trois Vallées Mountain Bike Challenge: 7th/8th July 2007   “
The French alpine resort of M̩ribel, situated in the heart of the Trois Vall̩es, is home to the world ʪs largest mountain bike course, and taking place on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July 2007 is the annual "Trois Vall̩es Mountain Bike Challenge".
Endorsed by the Fédération Française de Cyclisme, the competition is open to everyone and allows world class professionals and amateur mountain-bikers to attack the trails side by side   “ and all for free. The competition takes in a variety of events, with various levels of difficulty, including a 70kms touring event of all three valleys   “ made slightly easier thanks to the uphill use of ski lifts!
The Blue Ribbon event of the competition is a timed descent of a 7,000 ft drop from the top of the Saulire (2700m) down to Brides-les-Bains (600m). In 2006 the descent attracted over 500 entrants, with the winner descending through thick forest and narrow tracks in just 26 minutes.
With so many budget airlines now flying from regional UK airports to Geneva (just two hours from Méribel) getting to the Alps has never been easier or better value, Méribel Central Reservations has access to a number of hotels and self catering apartments situated throughout the valley, for example within walking distance of the mountain bike trails, ski lifts and shops (just 400m), is the one-bedroomed Dryades Apartment (sleeps up to four). Surrounded by pine trees, the price of a week  ™s stay, commencing 7 July, is just £235 (total   “ accommodation only)   “ under £59 pp (based on full occupancy).
Alternatively, for those who want to indulge themselves there, is the modern and luxurious Altiport Hotel. Offering 360° mountain views, the hotel is situated at the foot of the Altiport lifts on the edge of the Fontany Forest and right next to Méribel  ™s award winning golf course. Facilities at the hotel include a hot tub, sauna and gym. A week  ™s stay at the Altiport Hotel this summer starts from just £413 pp (half-board   “ based on two sharing).
Other activities available across the Trois Vallées include fly fishing (The French Fly Fishing Championships take place in Méribel on 16-17 June), white water rafting, rock climbing, canyoning (which involves traversing cliff faces, by a mixture of climbing down and across the mountain face and wading in ice-cold rock pools), paraponting, archery, swimming, horse riding and tennis. There are also a wide range of shops, bars, night clubs and a number of Michelin star rated restaurants scattered throughout the valleys.

Luxembourg and a showering of nearby regions are collaborating to make 2007 one of the most timely themed and innovative culture capitals of Europe.
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg’s theme for 2007 focuses on migration, crossing borders and cultural cooperation. And the program’s Pan European implementation drives home the concept. More than 400 projects will spread beyond the Grand Duchy to include the Saar and Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, the Lorraine in France and the Walloon Region in Belgium. Kick off events began in December 2006 in the City of Luxembourg
“It is the first time a European Capital of Culture will expand beyond one city or one country,” according to Brigitte Goergen, Director of the Luxembourg National Tourist Office in North America. The Luxembourg and Greater Region, European Capital of Culture 2007 will cover 25,100 square miles (about three times the size of New Jersey) in the heart of Europe, home to approximately 11.2 million people.
Luxembourg will welcome the year-long event with the inauguration of new cultural infrastructures, major exhibitions, world premieres of musical productions, theater plays and choreographies, projects for children, and community endeavors. More than 130 cross border projects underscore Luxembourg’s convenient location -- in the very heart of Europe.
A new Musee d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM), designed by I.M. Pei, the famous Sino-American architect, is among several important investments Luxembourg has made in anticipation of wearing the culture crown in 2007. Other recent developments: opening of the philharmonic concert hall by Christian de Portzamparc and restoration of the Rotondes, two former roundhouses built as repair stations for locomotives, which are now impressive venues for exhibitions and performances.
A host of gifted artists and performers have been engaged for a full roster of cultural year events. There will also be a major exhibition exploring migrations and globalization by the high-profile curator Hou Hanru.
