IL Snow Sculpting Competition
Teams of Carvers Descend on Rockford
to Build Amazing Snow Sculptures Jan. 16 - 18

ROCKFORD, IL ? Some artists use paint, clay, glass or metal?but this winter in Rockford, Ill., they?ll be using snow to create works of art! Don?t miss the 22nd Annual 2008 Snow Sculpting Competition, sponsored by the Rockford Park District, at the beautiful Sinnissippi Park. Teams of carvers from around the state will compete for the title, and will continue on to the National Snow Sculpting Competition in Lake Geneva, WI.
Watch in awe as highly-skilled teams use axes, shovels, ice chisels, and even machetes to create sculptures that tower over the average person! Teams have approximately 3 days to build their works of art, and then on Saturday, January 19, the public is invited to see the finished art and vote on their favorite. Sculptures will stay in place as long as weather permits.
The idea for the Annual Snow Sculpting competition came about in 1985 when two local businessmen were visiting Wisconsin and saw beautiful snow sculptures created by a local couple at a winter carnival. The couple were invited to Rockford and built Rockford a sculpture, a creation that included the Statue of Liberty and the American Eagle. The next summer, the businessmen heard of a group in Wisconsin that sanctioned state and national competitions. The first competition was held in Rockford in 1987.
So where does all the snow come from? After runways are cleared at the Chicago Rockford International Airport, snow is piled into trucks and brought to Sinnissippi Park. The snow is then poured into 6? x 6? x 10? wooden forms for the carvers. If an insufficient amount of snow has fallen, the event may be postponed to the following week. The Rockford Park District's mission is to "help you enjoy life" by providing a quality park and recreation system. The District was recently awarded Distinguished Agency status, after an in-depth review process.
