Submarine Touring
©2006Article and photo by Nancy S. Tardy
![]() Are you planning a Caribbean, Mexican or Hawaiian vacation? Consider signing up for the only chance that 99% of us will ever have to ride in a submarine. Currently operating at 11 major vacation sites (Aruba, Barbados, Curacao, Grand Cayman, Guam, Cozumel, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Waikiki Beach, Maui, and Kona) the Atlantis submarine provides a dramatic change of pace from beach lounging or snorkeling, and for less than $100. In business for over ten years, Atlantis submarines have carried over 6 million passengers without incident. Safety features include duplicate operating systems and continuous radio contact with its sister surface vessel.
Designed to give maximum viewing opportunities to the 48 passengers (it also carries three crew) through its 2’ wide viewing ports (13 to a side) and its oversized front window, the submarine also provides a crew member to help passengers identify aquatic life. Though only 65’ long, the sub has a comfortable seating/viewing area and is air-conditioned. No one seemed to feel claustrophobic while cruising, though the entrance and egress on narrow ladders might prove to be an obstacle to becoming a submariner.
The Atlantis submarine docked near its transport boat offers fun and interesting rides.
Cruising at depths up to 150’ near Bridgetown, Barbados in May, 2005, we nosed around an old shipwreck, spied exotic fish of all colors, shapes and sizes and exclaimed over the unique views of the coral reefs and sponge beds. From the ocean floor that appeared to be wallpapered with large brown amoeba-shaped decals to the tall ferns and giant palm-like leaves waving in the deep ocean current, picturesque details swam into constant view during our memorable 45-minute tour.
