Good Reads For Your Adventure Travels
Please Note: The books and Audios reviewed here are my honest opinions. I received these unsolicited and free for promotional purposes, but I simply do not review the ones I do not believe to be review worthy.
The Kimberley (Australia) An Adventurer's Guide by Ron and Viv Moon. The authors are intrepid travellers, with several decades of experience in the Australia outback as travel writers, with many guidebooks and twenty years of outdoor cooking columns to their respective credits. This book details every aspect of the great Kimberley, the part of Australia's west coast along the Indian Ocean and inward to the Ord River's man-made lakes, all of which is considered one of the last frontiers in the world. Much of this vast space has never been touched by modern mankind, but with this very comprehensive and beautiful guide, you can tackle this entire area as a camper or four-wheeler or in a sturdy RV. The book has beautiful photos, details including websites and GPS locations, guides and trek leaders to hire, accommodations, and excellent maps. Any traveller to explore this area MUST have this guide. Excellent and indespensible! Also order their cookbooks for out-of-doors from www.guidebooks.com.au Threads of Identity by Widad Kamel Kawar is a most fascinating compendium of the heritage of Palestine through costumes and fabrics. The author is one of the foremost authorities on the subject and her collection of stories, photographs of costumes, weavings, rugs, and fabrics from different regions of Palestine seems to be all inclusive. Her intention with the book is to document and preserve the history of Palestine through the 20th century as women experienced and remembered it in oral tradition. Women who survived the traumas and persecutions of this recenet history endured many hardships while continuing their survival through the creation of fabrics for their family's use and for sale. This is an important book in that it documents a country, not from the perspective of war and politics as most histories do, but from the perspective of the common people, mainly women, who have always had to be the backbone of the familly and society during hard times. And the fabrics have always been a woven history of a place. A beautiful as well as interesting book I highly recommend. Cairo Guide: The Practical Guide (new, revised edition) compiled by Claire E. Francy and updated and edited by lesley Lababidi will be your MOST valuable possession if you are traveling to or moving to Cairo. We toured there without it, and what a mistake! This handy-sized book is easy to pack and tells you everything you need to know about necessities of life and fun filled leisure time in this baffling city which represents the oldest and the newest of times, all mixed into one big, fascinating jumble. This book will guide you safely to whatever you need and will give you easy Arabic words to make yourself understood. The book is well indexed so you can find quickly whatever you need. Excellent and easy! Elle's Grand Adventure by Annie Coburn is a whimsical cartoon book of Travel Tips for the Mature Woman. It is delightfully illustrated by John Palamidy and Colorized by Linda Stiefler. The book cleverly teaches one how to take a trip abroad and be prepared for emergencies and have just enough packed to make the trip successful and enjoyable, instead of being overburdened with unnecessary items that you just have to lug around. This is an excellent gift for anyone who needs encouragement to be brave enough to travel abroad. It contains great reminders and checklist for even the most seasoned travelers. Atlas of Namibia: A Portrait of the Land and its People by John Mendelsohn, Alice Jarvis, Carole Roberts, and Tony Robertson is a large format book with everything you could ever want to know about this African country. There are many maps of each part of the country, its climate, geology, and even maps of habitats of flora and fauna, land use, and ownership and the demographics of the people who live in each area. Most of the information in the book is in the form of maps and graphs, with many photographs interspersed throughout. The book is factual and interesting and perfect for the general reader interested in Africa and for scientists, statisticians, and students, and researchers. Very comprehensive and well done. The Castle of Tabiano by Giacomo Corazza is a readable and enjoyable elegant, soft-cover book which tells the history of this famous castle in Italy. The village within the castle, which still thrives today and is a lovely tourist respite, is told through photos, illustration, and facts, stories, and legends. The book covers the main events from 969 to 1882 in this unique castle along the Pilgrims' way from Canterbury Abbey to the Holy Land, a route pilgrims enjoy exploring today. The children of the author, who has always lived within these medieval walls, have lovingly restored part of the castle location and operate it as the Inn Locanda del Colle Gatlinburg: A Tourist Town Guide by Summer L. Stanley is one of the guides from this new company, which strives to help travelers stay close to home while enjoying a less costly vacation in this economic downturn era. These guides, which now include Niagara Falls, Williamsburg, VA, Myrtle Beach, Atlantic City, Wisconsin Dells, Mackinac, and Key West will be updated every three years to keep you informed of the newest additions and fun in each town. I grew up near this town and we spent many weekends there, so I was very interested to read this guide, which gives the history and annual events, outdoor activities, dining, shopping, attractions, lodging, and much more...including all about this perfect venue for weddings and honeymoons. I particularly like the fact that the book also details Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and The Smokies and wonderful day trips to the surrounding areas of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Smoky Mountain National Park. This is the perfect guide to plan your trip to Gatlinburg. South Africa 2010 Travel Guru by Kerrin Cocks is a small travel guidebook that would be very helpful in planning your South African trip or to have if you live there. Different from the normal "travel guide book," this one is printed in smaller print without photos, with the exception of a few pages of color photos in the center. There are many small maps and one paragraph telling just a little about what many points of interest in each are are, just enough to know if you are interested in learning more elsewhere. The attractions, hotels, restaurants, etc. are listed with contact information but no descriptions or ratings etc. Getawayguide Kruger National Park by Cameron Ewart-Smith is a beautiful guidebook that is very thorough in its facts and helpful information about the most famous National Park in Africa, home of the beautiful safari animals. This third edition of the guide has even more information than the first two. Now it details over 2,500 kilometers of roads and tracks and includes detailed maps. You can check gate times and rest camp facilities so you don't end up at the wrong place, wring time. You will find maps of the rest camps also. There are beautiful color photos and many suggested activities for kids in the Park. You'll find highlighted the best points of interest and animals to see in the various places, most scenic and interesting drives and things to do while you are in each place. The book chapters are according to region and to the various Camps, which makes it easy to study your area and make plans before you go and as you are there. If you go to South Africa, get this book beforehand! India (Lonely Planet Country Guide) by Sarina Singh is an immense volume on anything anyone would wish to know when traveling to India. The book begins with 10 different itineraries, each covering a different part of India as well as different types of tours, giving the traveler great insight into the choices that are available in a trip to this country. The guidebook also has an overview of the history of the country with a timeline summary of each period beginning with 2600-1700 BC and moving through to the contemporary time of 2009 AD. These 20 pages of history are a valuable beginning to the traveler in being able to grasp what aspect of India or what part of India he or she might like to focus their trip. The rest of this 1244 page travel guide becomes very specific in giving a great deal of information on each area of the country as well as each major city and the key sights to be found in that area or city, including places to stay and eat arranged in order of budget prices to midrange prices to upper end prices. The 250 maps throughout the book showing regions and cities give the traveler a great orientation to whatever area or city found on his or her itinerary. Having read a number of novels by Indian writers or ones with their setting in India, I find that this book becomes a wonderful reference work from which I am able to look up places and expand my image of the places described in the novels and have a clearer understanding of what the author is imparting. This guidebook is an amazing effort at covering in such detail a country so densely populated with such a rich history and culture as well as a great divergence in climate. (Review by Bill Neely) Luxor Illustrated by Michael Haag Having just visited Egypt in the fall of this year and traveled on the Nile to many of the famous archeological spots from the Aswan area down to Cairo, I found Michael Haag’s book Luxor: Illustrated a must. The photographs and commentary recaptured my trip, helped to keep places I visited straight in my mind, and added to my knowledge of what I had seen. But the book is not just for the person who has visited the places along the Nile. I would have loved to have the book before my trip to really know what not to overlook in my travels. The book is also a wonderful resource for anyone interested in ancient Egypt and its history by bringing to life the images of the structures during the times of the different dynasties. I found the maps of the various areas and the outline of the key points of the Egyptian history from 3,000 B.C. to present at the beginning of the book very, very helpful and a great orientation that I would have loved to have with me during my travel down the Nile. The explanations of each temple that accompanied the pictures added greatly to my knowledge and appreciation of what I had seen and kept time periods and dynasties straight in my mind. Haag not only gives a wonderful photographic depiction of the Luxor area but also a glimpse at many other fascinating places that would be impossible to find time to visit on a tour of 10 to 14 days. We highly recommend this book! Wild Romance: Africa's most romantic safari lodges by Marsel van Oosten & Daniella Sibbing What a wonderful book to place on your table for everyone to see Africa, whether you have just returned from a safari, or are planning one, or will never go to Africa: the photos are BEAUTIFUL! The best places to stay for a romantic safari in each of six countries (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya) are captured in photo essays of each property and a half page review of the features including: the lodge and rooms, what to see and do, food and service, when to go, romance factor, and rates (which range from $400 - $1,000 per person, per night). There are full and double page photos of animals and landscapes between each lodge featured in the book. At the back of the book is contact information for each lodge and for transportation. The book is exquisite! Cultures of South Africa: A Celebration by Peter Joyce, photos by Roger and Pat de la Harpe is a marvelous book about all the different peoples who live in South Africa. Each chapter tells the history and customs, rituals and traditions of the various tribes who have inhabited the country since before recorded history. It also tells the story of the Dutch and their descendents and other current inhabitants. Each chapter is filled with beautiful photos of the peoples and their colorful traditions, dances, costumes, and ways of life. It is a treasure of a book for any resident of South Africa and a perfect memento for any visitor there. It is a must! Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia by Chris and Susan McIntyre is the guidebook we chose for our recent trip to Zanzibar Island, off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. This Brandt guidebook tells it all and was very helpful in planning our trip. We checked the recommendations for places to stay and eat and found them always to be right. The book guided us on what health precautions to take, which sites were most important to see, and how to just relax and enjoy this island in the Indian Ocean. This book has all the information you could need while planning or while visiting there. Be sure to take it with you. The republication of Gray Hill’s Journeys With The Beduins: A Narrative of and Adventures in Unfrequented Parts of Syria gives the reader a look at the Middleast at the end of the 1800s through the eyes of a Victorian adventure seeker. Hill made three trips to Jordan, Palestine, and Syria, mainly interacting with the Beduins of these regions. The book is done in a travel log fashion, giving Hill’s impressions of a land and people inhabiting that land in a delightful account. The reader gets a sense of what this area was like before it became a place of conflict and unrest that has created a feeling of uneasiness for the rest of the world. The Arab Beduins that Hill describes in his narrative are seen as intriguing characters, having a unique approach to life, which has been their way of life for hundreds of years. Hill’s wife also traveled with Hill and did sketches of the places that they visited. These along with photos of the various people Hill encountered are featured throughout the book. The reader is pulled along by Hill’s upbeat style of writing and the wonder at what lies around the bend or in the next valley for Hill and his group of travelers. At one point Hill’s group is held as prisoners by Beduins, and one will find it interesting how they attain their freedom. The last section of the book is devoted to folklore and stories that come the oral tradition of the peoples of the land Hill journeyed through. To look back our modern times and see the nature of these people and that area of the world as it existed a little over a hundred years ago and contrast it with what we see and hear in the news today is time travel that gives one new insight into our every changing world Victoria Falls and Surrounds, The Insider's Guide, by Ian Michler is a large format travel guide to help anyone traveling to Zambia, Botswana, of Zimbabwe to plan their trip, especially including Victoria Falls and a Safari. This guide is not only excellent for planning your trip, but also a beautiful keepsake of any trip to this area of Africa, with gorgeous photos and slick pages. (ISBN 0 595 29737 4) . Dangerous De Liaisons, What's Really Behind the War Between France and the US by Jean Marie Colombani and Walter Wells is very pertinent to read during this pre election period in the United States. This book was written by two of the world's leading newspaper editors. Colombani is editor of Le Monde, the major French newspaper, and Wells is an American who is editor in chief of The International Herald Tribune. The book has the format of a friendly but very well informed conversation between the two editors. The reader learns much of the history of the two nations and the conflict over the US war in Iraq. These men focus on the reasons behind the deteriorated relationship between France and the US, the new world in which terrorism has become a chief concern worldwide, and the rapidly developing economic impact of the growing European Union. If you are remotely interested in the way the world views the US and the international concept of the US since the end of the Cold War, this book is vital to read. You will gain insights into why relationships have deteriorated and what is behind the scenes that the general public does not know. It is a fascinating read to learn and explore "the chilling question: Can our two nations once again unite to make the world a better place or has our war only just begun?" . Mallorca, and its smaller neighbor Menorca, remain two of the most
compelling and rewarding destinations in the Mediterranean. Often
unfairly maligned as overdeveloped package tour playgrounds, the
first edition of the Time Out Mallorca & Menorca guide seeks to

Time Out London, 12 Edition
London is inspiring and frustrating in equal measures. It's
uncompromisingly urban, but a it's series of villages; it's awesome
and regal, yet rough and gritty; its luxury hotels, soaring
architecture, five star restaurants and glamorous shops are the envy
of the world, but real London is terraced streets, grimy
cobblestones, pie and mash and raucous street markets. Visitors would
be mystified if it weren't for the Time Out team of locally based
researchers and writers, who know how to get the measure of the most
exciting city in the world. The fully updated Time Out London guide
leads visitors through the capital in its many guises.
Time Out Paris, 12th Edition
There's no mystery about how Paris remains, to anyone with a pulse,
the most arresting treasure dome in the world: vivacity and attitude

glories of its gastronomy and the provocative insouciance of its
sexuality. Paris is one big
come hither wink. The Time Out Paris guide offers numerous and
diverse cultural opportunities, fine art to slam poetry, cabaret
to contemporary dance. The guide organizes everything that's relevant
to Paris both practically and culturally into a synthesis of

Time Out Istanbul, 2nd Edition
Capital of two major empires the Byzantine and Ottoman Istanbul is
rich with monuments, the earliest of Christian cathedrals to the
most decadent of oriental palaces. The city's bazaars offer shopping
at its rawest a glittery array of one million and one merchants, no
departments, no signs, no loyalty cards. It boasts a cuisine
descended the courts of the sultans, and only starts to party
once the UK has gone to bed. Surrounded by sea, built on seven hills
and with a panoramic profile of spiky minarets and cascading domes,
almost any angle it's breathtakingly gorgeous. The new edition
of the Time Out Istanbul guide gets beyond the obvious tourist draws
and clichéd subjects, and paints a picture of life in the city in all
its multi faceted glory.
Time Out Amsterdam, 8th Edition
Famous and infamous in roughly equal measure, Amsterdam continues to
draw a mix of tourists. On the one hand, the culture vultures, who
come for art at the Van Gogh Museum and music at the Concertgebouw.
On the other, the backpackers and bachelor partiers, drawn inexorably
and inevitably to the coffeeshops and red lit windows. The twain
rarely meets, but is at least bridged a little by visitors fascinated
in equal measure by both extremes in this magnificently
uncategorizable city. The Time Out Amsterdam guide provides travelers
with both sides of the coin, plus everything in between. The end
result is the definitive guide to Amsterdam.
Time Out Havana & the best of Cuba, 2nd Edition
So near, yet so far... the Caribbean outpost of communism that is
Cuba exerts a strange fascination on the free world, redolent of
glamour and gamblers, musicians, writers and mafiosi and recently
used as a James Bond location in Die Another Day. Havana's vibrancy,

BOOK REVIEWS

Review by Bill NeelyElegant Small Hotels:
A Connoisser's Guide
by Pamela Lanier
For those travelers who desire the intimate attention to detail and service in a hotel, Pamela Lanier's book Elegant Small Hotels is a must. The book encompasses a large number of hotels in the United States as well as numerous lodgings in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and even Turkey and Thailand. Each of the hotels shown met Ms. Lanier's criteria of having fewer than 200 rooms (I found that most were 20 to 60 rooms), a high staff to guest ratio, the feeling being in a fine residence, little touches not usually experienced in a normal hotel, and overall attention to details. The author also took into consideration the hotel's appeal in the area of meeting the various needs of today's experienced traveler, such as: services for business travelers needing Internet access, secretarial service on call, and teleconferencing; physical fitness facilities as well as privileges for the guests to other sports clubs in the area; and last but surely not least, fine cuisine and the particular dining atmosphere.
On each of the 238 pages of the book is the overall information of a particular hotel. These listings are categorized by country and state, beginning with a hotel in Alaska and ending with one in Istanbul, Turkey. With each listing, the reader will find about a 250 to 300 word description of the hotel and surrounding area, a picture, and an index that tells the reader such things as: address and phone numbers, room and suite rates, number of rooms and suites, attractions in area, restrictions, services and amenities, business facilities, sports facilities, and in hotel dining. I found that the room rates ran as low as $65 to $600. The photos give the traveler a good idea of the type of hotel being listed and the descriptive summaries give good detail as to the essential ambiance the author encountered.
Pamela Lanier has also written Golf Resorts: A Complete Guide, which focuses on over 1,000 nationwide, giving good evidence to her having a great deal of experience in this area of the travel field.

The Shoes of Kilimanjaro & Other Oddventure Travel Stories by Cameron Burns. The best way to review this book is to give you some exerpts the great reviews it is receiving: Burns' attitude seems to be "I travel, therefore I am." Keenly aware of the messes he gets into, you know that at times this guy is just asking for trouble. And while he's very good at finding it, what makes Burns a great storyteller is that he's very good at making you feel like you're walking in his tattered mud coated shoes." Kisha Ferguson, Outpost magazine (Canada)
"Colorado based journalist Cameron Burns would make the ideal travel partner. He's adventurous, open minded, and most importantly, has a great sense of humor." Leah Pence, Blue magazine
"If your taste is on the bizarre side, if your interest lies in the picaresque, the offbeat and the downright weird, I think we may have found you a little beauty here. Lovers of tourism by proxy are in for a treat. Any chap who can make me chuckle while covering such diverse subjects as the footwear favoured by Kilimanjaro porters, Welsh place names and kicking a football across America is fine by me. The last book to actually make me laugh was Puckoon back in 1971. I warm to Mr. Burns. In fact I warm to anyone who can a) take the piss out of the mountaineering fraternity so mercilessly and b) spend most of a holiday in Mexico feeding stray dogs and cats." John Horscroft, Climber magazine (UK)
"The attraction of the collection has as much to do with the unique stories found in each of the narratives as it does with the cartoonish sketches (also by Burns), the embarrassing honesty and the authentic fly by the seat of your pants attitude that powers Burns's taste for travel Š He brings us to a setting that is unique, beautiful, and desired by many of his readers and then makes a connection with them, usually reflecting the simple, common things that happen on every trip outrageous bugs, insufficient footwear, the obvious parallels of human lives throughout the world and the even more obvious differences between them. He intertwines these stories with fantastic humor and an accessibility that every traveler, even those who just dream of adventure, will understand." Aimee B. White, Aspen Daily News
"Cameron Burns goes on the Out There circuit (Patagonia, Yucatan, Africa, China) and comes back with tales of footwear, bathtubs and driving habits. These are woven into a narrative that's thankfully short on trailhead directions and long on cultural observations, like evaluating cultures on their treatment of domestic animals. Fans of public television can imagine Rick Steves on acid unleashed with a good Google connection." Curtis Robinson, Mountain Gazette magazine

A TRAVEL GUIDE TO HEAVEN by Anthony DeStefano Although this book has gotten rave reviews in many sectors, I found it a bit unreal and too materialistic. DeStefano's idea of heaven is like a rich person's ideal sight seeing tour, and he takes you on a real tour of all the places and experiences you will have if you live right and die good. According to other reviews this is ideal for Christians who take the promises of gold paved streets and pearly gates literally, and it is of great comfort to dying patients and their families. I guess the book serves as a bright, fanciful tourist guide for people who need that kind of belief, but I prefer to think of Heaven as a place of deep mystery and no need of materialism, a place where God IS, and that will be all that matters to us then.
