Drive out of your way for this great Mexican food
By Bonnie Neely
El  Paso, Texas:  We just discovered THE BEST Mexican food north of the border! BARRIGA'S  BAR  AND GRILL  opened December 20 in Sunland Park Shopping Center on the west side of El Paso, just north of  Interstate 10.   We just happened to stop there, and never suspected  it was their first night to be open  because it was so well managed by Luis Martinez, with his staff and chefs so well-trained.  (Normally, I'll not go to a restaurant until it has been open at least a month, because the opening weeks can be very disappointing.  But not so here!)
The dishes are not Tex-Mex but authentic Mexican comidas, and the food at BARRIGA'S was so much better than any we had ever tasted that it was like the difference between  the taste of organic foods and canned foods!  The owners, Ricardo and Carlos Murguia, who are brothers,  assured us that all the dishes are prepared in their kitchen daily from the freshest, natural ingredients.  For extremely modest prices, the  portions are most generous, and the presentation is very pleasing. The restaurant is the first in the United States, but the brothers own two other BARRIGA'S BARS AND GRILLS and also MONTANA  STEAKHOUSES in Juarez, Mexico, which have been quite popular there for the last decade. We wish BARRIGA'S great success and growth in the U.S. as a new chain!  BARRIGA'S  is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; closed only on December 24 and 25.
