Las Vegas, The Entertainment Capital of the World for Travel Adventures
By Bonnie  & Bill Neely

caesar's palace, las vegas, nevadaIn the 1990's Las Vegas Hotels and Casinos competed to out-build each other, each creating the newest and grandest replica of some famous place in the world.  In the far-distant future archeologists will be baffled to find a second New York City, Rome, Venice, Egypt, Paris, and many more of the world's most coveted picture post cards places, crowded together in one long corridor.  Vegas, the leading entertainment capital of the world, was historically "Sin City," but in the 1990's, in order to cater to the young adult generation who took their children everywhere, many of the resort hotels provided family entertainment and attractions like roller coasters, pirate ships, clowns, boat rides and arcades, which children and teens could enjoy. But in the Twenty- First Century the Las Vegas Tourism Council is trying to get away from the family entertainment concept and back to what Las Vegas is famous for: gambling, booze, and women.  In the city where most vice is legal, the new slogan is "What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas."  And about 40 million tourists a year from all over tnewyork, new york, las vegas, nvhe world continue to flock in, the visitor population changing about every three and a half days.

However, the approximately one and a half million local citizens say to live in Las Vegas is completely different.  Locals seldom go to the Strip, unless their jobs require it, and they say life away from the tourist glitz is safe, quiet, with excellent school systems and opportunities to nurture families in healthy atmospheres.  The climate is dry and very pleasant, except for summer heat, but even that cools considerably at night.  Las Vegas is located at the entrance to the Great Basin and the Western National Parks, so surrounding natural environs are some of the most spectacular in the world.  This location is also part of the attraction for foreign toursits, who can rent an RV, stay in Las Vegas RV Parks, and drive on day trips quite inexpensively to the Grand Canyon, Bryce & Zion Canyons, Valley of Fire, and Lake Mead, and Mojave Desert.

caesar's palace, nevada, lasvegasThere is no day or night in the Casinos, where the 24-hour-a-day ding, ding, ding, ding of the winning slots is the lure many cannot resist.  High stakes tables  are fun to watch, even if you don't know how to play or could not afford the game. Excellent food is inexpensive in the Casinos and each Resort vies for the best chefs and fine cuisine, along with the come-on buffets or enormous breakfasts at any time of day or night. But the Shows probably attract as many tourists to Las Vegas as anything else.  Some of the best entertainers in song, dance, comedy, illusion, and magic make their tours through here periodically, and others, like Celine Dion, Danny Gan, and Wayne Newton have year-round billings.

The Blue Man Group Live at the Luxor has a permanent billing with the Luxor, and it is a show not to be missed!  The now famous blue-faced mimes put on a high energy show that combines art, percussive instruments, mime, comedy, vaudeville, science, and imagination and  will have you talking about it for years.  The group's showmanship with percussion instruments is unbelievable, ranging from drums to plumbing pipes, often splattering paint as the blue hands rhythmically bang with a beat that will go through you. Audience participation is stimulated by gimmicks and the blue men going among the viewers, but don't sit in the first five rows unless you wish to be in a raincoat (provided) because you never know what messy prop might splatter you, all in good fun of the evening.

The comical and talented Blue men have not always enjoyed such success.  Originally street mimes in the 1980's, the original trio,   Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton, and Chris Wink, performed in a club in front of Casablanca.  In New York they also performed a sidewalk funeral for the end of post modern deconstructional theories of art.  They said  in those days they would stay blue for as long as it would take. Now the group has become so famous and popular the main concern is in replicating itself to meet the demands for performances.  They now have several different performance groups in various cities and talent scouts always searching for new members.  Being an excellent percussionist is only one of the requirements. The men must have similar body size and profile to match the group and must have the personality trait to do the comedy required and the physical stamina to keep up the high energy demands of the performance.  When new performers are selected they spend six months in training. Some say that perhaps the most difficult thing to learn is how to just stand and do or say nothing.

BLueMan GroupAt the Luxor Theater the seven million dollar production incorporates giant screen projections, psychadelic lighting, black lights, miles of crepe paper streamers, which add to the fun and impact of the evening.  But if strobing lights affect you negatively, or if you are clostrophobic or have a heart problem the show is not for you.  We sat beside a couple who had purchased tickets to the show for the seventh time, the show they choose each time they come to Vegas.  Once when someone asked Goldman, one of the original Blue Men, why people would come back again and again to see the show he responded, "I firmly believe the reason people come to the show six or eight times is they'd try to describe it to their friends and they couldn't, so they'd just bring them!" It's true, you just HAVE to see the show because it is too fun and too strange to describe!

Zumanity, cirque du solielCirque du Soliel has long been famous for the Vegas productions of "O" and "Mystere," two of the most popular shows in Las Vegas.  Cirque du Soliel also produces nine shows which appear in other cities, and each is completely different, so don't think if you have seen one you have seen Cirque du Soliel's only show.  Now, in keeping with the Sin City image Las Vegas wants to keep, the French company has launched a new show at New York,New York Theater, perfect for open-minded Las Vegas adult audiences.  "Zumanity" is designed to shock and entertain you in hilarious, sensual dramatics which poke fun at Puritanical rigidity.

The imaginative costumes keep the audience wondering if they are seeing near nudity or just very convincing body stocking art.  While Puritan Pilgrims chase everything from young ugly maidens to cows and audience members, the bump and grind acts on stage are not sex acts but incredibly choreographed dances and acrobatic performances that suggest every kind of sexual orientation or fantasy you could imagine.  The RingMaster of this sexy circus keeps an hilarious commentary of inuendos going throughout the show which s/he orchestrates to the audience's climax of loud hilarity at the end.

The performance of dance, art, and amazing body gymnastics defy belief, as in other Cirque du Soliel shows.  The pair of female swimmers seem to be made of rubber and have everyone gasping at their magnificent performance in and out of a large aquarium.  The beautiful ballet of lovers is body control and dance to absolute perfection.  The disjointed man who dislocates his joints and almost turns himself inside out is utterly incredible, almost painful to watch.  The magnificent artistry of each act lives up to Cirque du Soliel's reputation for incredible excellence, while the sexy and comical tone of the show is perfect for Las Vegas.  Be careful whom you take to this show!
