Atlantic City, Fun For All

For our recent trip to Atlantic City, NJ, we chose to stay at the Sheraton Hotel. This is the perfect place for weddings and conventions, as it connects to the huge AC Convention Center where the train station is also located. Jitneys, or small trolleys, run regularly to take you to any location you wish. Because this hotel has no casino, it is also the perfect choice for families to stay, although it is not on the beach. The large rooms are beautifully decorated with brown checkered hypo-allergenic "feather" duvets and large marble bathrooms. With special week-end packages or luxurious Presidential suites, this hotel can meet nearly any budget or desires for a wonderful stay. The mezzanine features a lovely Italian restaurant for three meals a day with one of the very best grand views of the city. Tun Tavern on the hotel property is a micro brewery, restaurant, and bar and an exciting gathering place for lunch, dinner, and late night fun. The food is delicious and moderately priced. The brew master, Ted, is rightly proud of the brewing operation, which is one of only a few that are on a hotel property and in a restaurant. Ted, himself a graduate of brewmaster's school in Sacramento after being fascinated by the process as a hobbyist for years, is the only one who works in the microbrewery. He takes care of the creation of the recipes, ordering, brewing, and storing of the beer. It was some of the best beer we'd ever tasted. He has five standard brews he regularly formulates and other unique blends which he develops and alternates as he desires.
The process starts by placing the malted barley into a huge kettle and adding water which turns the grain into a mash. This water collects the flavors after turning the grain into starch and is drained off into a kettle where hops is added for a particular flavor and color, and the mixture is boiled for about an hour and a half. After cooling, the liquid is filtered and placed in a huge stainless steel drum where the yeast is added and the brew ferments for up to two weeks. Then it is clarified and piped into cold storage units to be served on tap in the restaurant. Ted's special brew, which he calls "Freedom Ale," just won the Brewmaster's most coveted award for the year in an international contest. He began making this special brew for the first time in August before the treacherous 9/11 events and had planned to serve it on his own birthday, which is September 11. Instead, he kept it until the following year and named it in memory of those who lost their lives on that date. Now each year he serves Freedom Ale in their honor on September 11. In November each year Tun Tavern also features a special event in honor of the birthday of the US Marine Corps, which was founded in the original Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, a favorite gathering place even in George Washington's day, The Sheraton Hotel is also the Headquarters for the Miss America Contest, which is the exciting event here each September. You'll find a bronze statue of Burt Parks in the entry garden outside the hotel. In the Reception and Mezanine is a fascinating museum of Miss America gowns, shoes, photos, and memorabelia. Atlantic City attracts thousands who come to see the grand competition. Just across the street from the Sheraton you'll find The Walk, a new section of upscale brand outlet stores for a great day of shopping. Atlantic City has twelve huge Casino Hotels. Of course gaming has long been the reason many people come to Atlantic City, the only place in New Jersey where it is licensed. However, by contrast to Las Vegas which is reinventing itself as Sin City, Atlantic City has much for families and offers entertainment for everyone. Golfers will find many courses from which to choose for special golfing challenges. We chose The Links at Brigantine, the suburb just North of Atlantic City, a few miles beyond Harrah's Casino and the popular new Borgada Casino. This beautiful public course is in the style of Scotland's time-honored links and is the original golf course in the area. There are numerous tidal water hazards and sand traps, and a thick wall of pampas grass shields the bordering homes. It is well groomed and marshaled and presents fun challenges for beautiful golfing. Fees range from $35 in winter to about $65 in summer. After golf, be sure to eat a delicious seafood lunch or dinner at the nearby Laguna Beach Grill and Martini Bar. You can dine on the porch overlooking the beautiful Atlantic beach or in the quiet and lovely inside dining area. The restaurant is open daily for three meals, and the bar is a popular place for the beach crowd as well as locals.
You'll find many excellent shows and musicals, illusionists, comedians, and reviews in Atlantic City, which change frequently. Check the listing to reserve tickets before you arrive, but most have tickets available on the spot also. We chose the so, so funny "Menopause, The Musical" at Resorts Casino Hotel . The music was the only script and all the songs were new plays-on-words to songs from the fifties and sixties, making the musical pertinent to Baby Boomers who are now in the Change. It is histerically funny and the audience of men and women howled with laughter. When in Atlantic City, don't miss The Comedy Club at the Tropicana Casino. The show changes constantly and features different professional stand-up comedians who will make you laugh yourself hoarse for two hours. Really super fun. Everyone is required to buy a drink, and non-alcoholic beverages of all kinds are also available. Parking in the Casino garage is quite inexpensive, or you can arrive in the AC Jitneys. Come in time to enjoy the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk along the ocean before the show, and perhaps have fun for several hours on the terrific Midway Amusement Park. Ripley's Believe It or Not on the Boardwalk is also a fun family attraction. The Steel Pier, famous for generations, is a huge amusement park which is fun for all ages, open day and night during the tourism season. The famous Million Dollar Pier has recently been cleared by Caesar's Palace Casino in order to build a Forum, similar to theirs in Las Vegas. It will be open in 2005.
Other places you'll want to visit while you are in Atlantic City can meet your every interest. At Gardner Harbor you'll find the Atlantic City Aquarium which is small but well done and informative, especially for children. While you are in this area be sure to climb the Absecon Lighthouse for a wonderful view. You can get sport fishing tours from here or see the clams and shrimp being unloaded by the professional fishermen. There are several harbour tour companies which offer a wonderful way to see Atlantic City from the water. Sunset cruises are very popular.
After photographing the historic houses with the tall boat garages where the rum runners during Prohibition hid their wares, we went to the porch of The Back Bay Alehouse, a delightful seafood restaurant and bar. Three-fifths of the clams in the world are caught around here, so we began with the delicious New England clam chowder (the white cream one), a perfect choice. Our meal was very tasty. You'll enjoy a drive a few miles just south of Atlantic City where the most expensive homes and summer mansions are. You'll want to photograph Lucy, the only remaining one of the of the three elephants built as unique hotels in the 1930's. Lucy is an oddity worth seeing, and you can ascend into the small museum inside. The fee is $5 and it is open only on peak tourism times. We, unfortunately, were a few days too early to see inside. The beaches all along this lovely coast are wide with white, sugary sand. New Jersey beaches are well maintained and very clean. Atlantic City Beaches have no fees, but the others require badges whenever there is a lifeguard or at peak tourist seasons and week-ends. Fees vary but most are about $6 per person per day, with season passes available. The State Park Beaches are wildly beautiful and have excellent restroom and changing room buildings. The fee per car is $10 a day.
