![]() Diving with Sharks and Shark Divers

Never put my mom in a situation where she can argue. We had purchased a video of our dive the day before we were to leave the country. We were told it would be delivered to our resort the same day. After packing everything for our flight and recognizing we still had not received the video, we drove to the dive shop to inquire why.
Upon arriving, my mother took the grave responsibility of ranting and raving at the dive masters. These were her words verbatim, “I would much rather be on the beach or snorkeling than here arguing with you people.” This statement elicited the attention of the boss, who observed reservedly, the huffing and puffing of my mom. He said nothing of the video, but made mention to her desire to snorkel. He walked over and informed her, quite emphatically, of a great little place he knows. He’ll even taxi us to the place for free. There’s some good news!
At this point, I feel it’s pertinent to explain what these grown men do. They have made a full time career of jumping off a perfect running boat into the open ocean with a 10-gallon bucket of dead fish. They drop into a swarm of twenty or thirty hungry, excited reef sharks. These aren’t just any reef sharks, but commonly named Korean Reef Sharks. Need more be said about that? So they drop seventy feet under the ocean surface with their bucket of chum and proceed to tease the sharks for about twenty minutes. When they see the testosterone levels in these sharks is peaking, this is evidenced at the point when the sharks begin fighting and snapping at one another, they open the bucket and enjoy the rip-roaring excitement of twenty-some sharks dividing the contents of a single ten gallon bucket among themselves. These guys do this three times a day, five days a week AND they subject other novice divers to the documentary-type exhibition for no small fee.
So this should be warning enough, but Mom is in charge here and wants to snorkel. We clamber into a long dingy and begin the shuttle out into the open ocean. Over the roaring diesel engine and the pounding five-foot waves, the boss fellow briefs us. Here’s the gist of it, “Here are two life vests in case of emergencies; don’t touch anything and the current will bring you to the beach where you can exit the water. Do your roll in entry off the side of the boat.” We roll into the water and give him the universal “ok” sign. He smiles and then shuttles off. I look around and realize that his unnerving, creepy smile is the last one I’ll see for some time.
So here we are a mile from shore, with 20MPH winds, five-foot waves, snorkel gear and an inflatable life vest. How did this happen, I find myself thinking; I just wanted my video!
At this point, what can we do? So we do what anyone would do and we begin swimming toward shore. We’re swimming and swimming and we begin to notice the ocean floor looks rather jagged and close to the surface. We notice the coral formation about five seconds before the pounding waves threaten to crush us against it. So now a razor sharp stalagmite rock labyrinth, which peaks five inches from the water’s surface stands between us and our destination. We begin navigating through sandy channels we find in the reef maze and only dead end about four times. Eventually, we find an open route over fifty feet of water. Needless to say, the visibility is about ten feet, so the contents of the other forty still remain a mystery.
To slow the rising panic, remember these are our shark-infested waters here, we try to focus on other things. My eyes catch a silver fish in the distance. I look to my mom in attempt of showing her the fish. My eyes, however, are drawn to her two gaudy necklaces, the dangling Rolex and one sparkling engagement ring. Incredibly appropriate attire for a day of swimming in the open ocean. I look back to the fish and, more good news; it’s a Barracuda. This fish is very sheik, in a class all of its own; quite notorious throughout the diving community. Barracudas generally attack only other fish. They have impeccable sight reflexes and can tell their choice meal by a single sparkle from a light reflection off of a silvery surface. Mom covers herself and on we swim. Thirty minutes into our adventure we feel we must be making progress. The swim begins to mellow as we adjust to our situation. Soon, however, we are greeted by a gang of jellyfish. They are clear and, evidently, this makes it hard to spot them until stung. The waves and current are not helpful factors either.
We keep swimming; we are not quitters! I say this as though we have a choice in the matter. We finally near the beach and are beyond ready to exit the water. At this point, it is forty-five minutes from the start of our endeavor. We swim in the direction of what looks to be the easiest point of departure by way of the beach, but realize we have encountered another problem. The beach seems to only be on the shore. The mass of spiky rock is in the water. With rocky coral reef encircling our feet, we drag our weary bodies around a corner and to the dock. I, and somehow, she manage to fling ourselves onto the four-foot high dock.
Tired and humbled I head towards the office. As I’m walking I feel some extra weight on my shoulders, the life vest. I never used it, however, it seemed to have inflated itself, but no, not with air. It was filled to capacity with water. It was very helpful for the boss fellow to provide us with leaky life vests, just in case there wasn’t enough water already supporting us in the ocean.
In the end, I received my video and mom learned a valuable lesson. When it comes to dealing with recreational shark divers, keep your mouth shut!
With all the things there are to see and do in the world it should come as no surprise that there are some real travel adventures to be had. One thing to consider when taking an overseas excursion is where to stay. Timeshares are a great option that allows you to lodge comfortable and affordably. With resorts begining to offer more timeshare programs world wide, there are more owners looking to sell their timeshare properties. So get your passports reaady, get your plane tickets, and start enjoying everything the world has to offer.
