FLY AWAY – SIX FLIGHT MUSEUMS
©2006 Janice Lovelace
Is your family interested in airplanes and flight? Check out these six places for fun and educational trips.A good start is at Kitty Hawk, N.C. – home of America’s first manned flight by Orville and Wilbur Wright. The Wright Brothers National Memorial commemorates where the first flight occurred in December 1903. Climb up Kill Devil Hill and look down on the field where the first attempts landed. Imagine you are Wilbur or Orville standing there on a cold and windy December morning. The weather was growing worse and this was probably their last chance of the season. Success - there were 4 flights that day, with the longest lasting 59 seconds. Notice the markers in the fields showing each flight a little longer than the previous one. On the last flight, the plane was blown over on landing, ending its usefulness. Tour the reconstructed camp building on the grounds. The Wrights spent weeks here testing and preparing for their historic flight. One building reconstructs the hangar and another their quarters. The Visitor’s Center traces the history of the Wright Brothers and early flight. The bookstore has numerous books on aviation. Parking is plentiful. Entrance fee is $3.00. Plan to spend at least an hour here. For more info: http://www.nps.gov/wrbr/
Wilbur commented to a reporter that they could not have succeeded without their sister, Katharine. She was involved in the airplane manufacturing company in Dayton, OH, and was the more social member of the family. One of the largest exhibits about her is at the International Women’s Air and Space Museum, located at the Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, OH, (down the street from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and Great Lakes Science Center). Along with the exhibit on Wright, the museum has fascinating exhibits on women in the history of aviation. Learn more about Bessie Coleman, the first African-American woman pilot. Find out about the Ninety-Nines - the first women pilots group. Although 117 women were invited to join the new organization, only 99 did – hence the name! Amelia Earhart was elected as their first President in 1931. Check out the clothing from early days of flight. It is a wonder the women were able to even get in the planes with so much on. Also included is astronaut wear from recent years. There is a small bookstore and a larger research area. No admission but donations are welcome. http://www.iwasm.org
Everyone knows about the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. on the Mall. It is a must see. But their newest site, The Steven Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Virginia is worth the visit. It opened in 2003 with a huge 10 story high hangar space that allows over 100 airplanes and thousands of artifacts to be exhibited. Planes hang from the ceiling and fill the floor. They range from the earliest Wright era planes to the restored space shuttle Enterprise. This is the only place to see the Enola Gay – the plane that dropped the bomb on Japan. Plan on a couple of hours, especially if you go to the IMAX Theater. Admission to the Center is free, but parking is $12. http://www.nasm.si.edu/museum/udvarhazy A flight museum in Kalamazoo, Michigan? One of the newest museums is the AirZoo, the total flight experience. It is more than a museum – it is hands-on exhibits, rides, simulators and airplanes. Set up in chronological order, the visitor starts with hot air balloons, progresses through biplanes, a WWII bomber, and all the way through to a space shuttle simulator. Rides help children experience the sensation of hot air balloons and early biplanes. The whole family will want to repeat the World War II bombing mission in the 4D theater. The seats rock on take off and as bombs are dropped. Feel the air circulation as it would be in the plane. Follow the full trip of the bombing run. Simulators are available for all to experience a jet fighter or the space shuttle. We spent about 2 hours here, but add more if you stay for lunch. If you are an aviation buff, arrange for a behind the scenes tour of their restoration center. It is for those over 16 and an extra cost, but well worth it. General admission to the Air Zoo is $19.50 for adults; $17.50 for seniors (ages 60 and over); children age 6-15 are $15.50. Parking is plentiful and free. http://www.airzoo.org/Seattle, Washington is home to Boeing Aircraft. The Museum of Flight, located at Boeing Field in south Seattle, is a must see. Go inside the Concorde and walk down the aisle – it’s very narrow. Experience Air Force One as you walk through the plane and see the different living and working spaces used by Presidents in the 50's and 60's. One of the newest museum exhibits is the Personal Courage Wing, with planes from both World Wars. This two level exhibit has a collection of 28 fighter aircraft, from all sides of the conflicts. It also highlights the Tuskegee Airmen (the first African American military pilot unit) and Women in Aviation. In the main exhibit hall, view the early planes, especially those built by Boeing. Even enter into a reconstructed early “workshop” like one where Bill Boeing worked. One fun stop is the “Tower” where visitors can watch planes take off and land, and listen to the real tower-pilot crosstalk conversations. Climb in the cockpit of a Blackbird or Hornet fighter jet. Spend time in the space exhibit and see both Russian and American spacecraft. Admission is $14 adults, $7.50 for children 5-17 years old. Parking is free. http://www.museumofflight.org
