Brian Head, Utah, near Cedar Breaks National Monument, is one of the best-kept secrets of the snow fun world, and the 120 year-round residents of the beautiful little mountain town would really prefer to keep it that way. But wonderful places have a way of being discovered!Southwest Airlines offers good service to the newly expanded Airport in Las Vegas, the closest place to fly into. You can get the best of two worlds if you select one of the Las Vegas-Brian Head Show & Ski Packages, which offers an overnight in the world-renowned glitzy city on both ends of your skiing holiday. Call to get these bargain rates.
You'll have to rent a car for the three-hour, easy drive to Brian Head, but it is worth the drive. The last few miles are climbing a winding route into the 10,000-foot mountains. This two-lane excellent highway is constantly cleared and well-maintained. You can be assured of snow the entire season, from October through April, and the typical base is 400 inches! This microclimate usually has snow well into May and many years even until August, although the town shuts down during May so workers can rest. Brian Head is famous for excellent mountain biking and motor cycling holidays in summer.
Cedar Breaks Lodge and Spa offers the most elegant of accommodations at Brian Head and is a wonderful choice of place to stay, but make your
reservations early! You'll find a cozy fireplace and small kitchenette in each of the large rooms. After a day of skiing or trekking in the snow, you'll relax your tired body in the beautiful heated pool, whirlpool spas, and dry saunas. If you prefer you can spend as long as you wish working out in the state-of-the-art exercise room near the pools, or play almost any kind of video game in the garage level game room, where you'll find a pool table also. You won't have to get out in the cold in search of food. There are two excellent restaurants, a snack bar, and wet bar on site, and the service and cuisine are very good.Parking is underground, so you don't have to worry about digging your car out of the snow. They are open year round except April 20 - May 20 and the month of October.
Your holiday in Brian Head won't be complete without treating yourself to the incredibly relaxing indulgences at the on-sight full service Spa at Cedar Breaks Lodge. The professional therapists, both male and female, will pamper you with any kind of treatment your sore muscles, or weathered skin could desire. But the treatment times, which are also available in the evenings for after skiing, fill up fast, so when you book your room be sure to reserve Spa treatments.
Although black diamond and double diamond skiers might become bored, we found Brian Head to have some of the very best Intermediate slopes of any place we have skied throughout the U.S. and Canada. They are just challenging enough to be really fun without becoming scary. And there are many blues and greens from which to choose, so you won't tire of the terrain, which is well groomed. Good instruction for all levels is available, and lift tickets for the excellent chairlifts on the two mountains are more reasonable than most ski areas.
If you plan to place your children in Kid Kamp, make your reservations when you book your trip. The ratio of care provider-to-child is one-to-four. Kiddie ski lessons are included, if you wish your child to participate. And a hot lunch is served. Very good equipment rentals are available at the ski slope, and also in the little town of Brian Head at Brianhead Sports (435-677-2014). You can also find snowshoe, snow mobile, and cross-country ski rentals at Giant Steps Outfitters (435-677-3101). Adjacent to the ski slope is a fun tubing center, which your whole family will enjoy. You'll feel like historic Russian Royalty when you take a ride through the silent Christmas card scenery in a horse-drawn sleigh, available just across from Cedar Breaks Lodge. Cross-country ski trails through the cedar and hardwood forests are beautiful. And when the stretch of highway for three miles farther up the mountain is open, drive to the National Monument Overlook to see the beautiful national treasure, Cedar Breaks National Monument. You'll want to photograph the amazing pink “hoodoos,” naturally-sculpted spires, which look like ancient Native Americans wrapped in blankets as they assemble, shrouded in snow. Going into The Monument is not possible in winter. Be sure to wear your snow boots. You'll find good eating in the town of Brian Head. You can ski to Bump and Grind at the base of Chairlift 3. Another great place to know about is Mountain View Bakery, Deli & Market, just across from Cedar Breaks Lodge in the little general store. (Call 435-677-2411) You'll lick your chops over the wonderful homemade pastries and meals anytime of day, and your taste buds will recognize the loving labors of a real culinary school chef. Don't miss Barbara's signature Brianberry pie. Navajo Ski Basin also has an excellent evening restaurant The Lifthouse, where you'll be amazed at the continental cuisine available in this tiny little town.
Of course, on your return through Las Vegas you'll be sure to win back all your expenses?? With your Ski and Show package you can choose to stay at the Strip, or in the classic area of Fremont Street. Be sure to see a show or two before you leave. We recommend three favorites: Spirit of the Dance at the Golden Nugget in Fremont Street Area, and on the Strip see “Siegmund and Roy” at The Mandalay, and Cirque du Soleil's “Mystere” at Treasure Island. Plan ahead to be sure to get the show tickets you prefer. If you wish to fly, check Southwest's excellent schedules ( 800-435-9792) into Las Vegas, NV, just three hours away. You can get great combination packages to enjoy shows in Las Vegas and then travel to Brian Head. For the packages call Reservations Plus (800-805-9528) or click here.
